Start with Child of Stars and follow the volumes in order as the stories build on one another. To be sure you can always google Thorgal and the Wikipedia has the correct chronological order of the series in English.In regards to the series: Amazing characters with development, great story lines, fantastic plots, and a balanced amalgam of the past and the future all squeezed into what is called Thorgal. The only negative I see is that the series is behind by more than 50% in translation to English, meaning after you get to number 19 your are stuck till the next one comes out which sometimes maybe a year or more; or if you don't have the patience for the English translations learning French is always an option!!
I love the Thorgal series since having read several as a child. The artwork, stories, and characters I'd readily give five stars. The only reason I'm giving this less is that the soft-cover cinebook series, as others have pointed out, have terrible bindings which often causes the pages to loosen after one read-through. Get another version if you can, but if you can't, having a poorly bound version is better than not reading them. I particularly enjoy the coloring of the drawings in Thorgal. They are often dominated by a single color from appropriate lighting, which gives the scene a certain atmosphere and feeling.
These stories are a part of my childhood, and shaped my love for Norse mythology at an early age. I still have a couple of the hard cover editions printed in my birth year! I was elated to finally find a reasonably priced way to enjoy the stories I missed. HOWEVER, this soft cover trade is of HORRIBLE quality! I have not even finished this story for fear of utterly destroying the book. Every page turn breaks the binding a little more. Half way through my first read i was holding several pages that fell out. I was hoping my child may someday enjoy the stories i loved, but these books won't last that long. Avoid these and spend a bit more for the hardcovers, if you can find them.
Magically beautiful story and amazing graphics. Captivating read for the whole family.I enjoyed reading it with my sons. Now I'm reading it with my grandson.
